As with all disciplines of Martial Arts, it is important to accompany Jiu Jitsu with a good exercise regime and healthy diet. One of the key areas of exercise that will really help benefit your progress in Jiu Jitsu is a good range of cardio vascular exercises, this is different for everyone, several of our Sensei enjoy running and this is a great cardio workout that keeps them healthy and fit to handle the challenges that Jiu Jitsu throws at them. Many of our students have different preferences for their cardio vascular workout, from cycling, to swimming, to simple exercises that can be done around the house.
You can ask any of our Brown Belts who are preparing for their Black Belt gradings how important a good workout it to get them ready for a very intense grading. We encourage them to try and commit to a 45 minutes session 2-3 times a week in preparation.
Cardio is anything that gets your heart pumping! It is a simple as that, we do quite a bit of cardio in our warm ups, but this alone is not enough, so think about something you would enjoy, don’t do something you won’t enjoy as that will only lead to you giving up.
So be it cycling, swimming, running, rugby, sit-ups in your front room, get up and do something. Keep at it and you will feel so much better for it!
